The Last Caretaker Oil: Where to Get It and What It Is For

Get oil from the oil pump at Black Vein Station, grind spare materials in a Recovery Grinder, or use Project Jonah whales to collect oil from the seabed.

The pump at Black Vein Station never runs dry, so once it is working you have as much oil as you can store and carry. It cannot be built anywhere else.

Black Vein Station is an oil rig at sea, at map coordinates 49, -70.

Two petrol tanks and two diesel tanks are already built at the station.

One room on the main level stays locked even when the whole station is powered. Get in from below: go down the stairs at the side of that building into the small rooms underneath and climb up through a hole in the ceiling.

The Recovery Grinder unlocks in the Ugly Work quest: scan its two missing blueprints, one in the Eternal Flame silo and one in the Dead Breath silo.

It turns spare materials into oil and a few other materials, with some loss. Supply electricity and connect an oil tank to collect the output.

Oil from every 100 units you grind: Gold 40 L; Iron, Silicone, Titanium 30 L; Copper, Rubber, Polyurethane, Aluminum 20 L; Plastic 15 L; Glass, Carbon Fiber, Fabric 10 L.

At Platform Omega, find the control room beneath the platform. Connect one fully grown human to the control socket, then send the call out to sea. A Human Seed is not enough.

Once Project Jonah starts, the whale dives to collect oil from the seabed and returns after filling up.

Feed oil and electricity into a Distillation Tower to produce both diesel and petrol.

The Distillation Tower is listed at skill level 20.

Stainless Steel: each one takes 1 Iron, 10 L of Oil and 10 Wh in the Fabricator, with oil piped into the Fabricator.

The wiki also lists plastic as a Distillation Tower output.

Petrol fuels the CS-17 Courier Skimmer and Salvage Gyro.

Petrol serves as ammunition for the Flamer Pistol and Flamethrower.

A Large Electric Generator burns petrol to produce electricity and CO2. Route its CO2 to the Sabatier Reactor with a Gas Cable.

The wiki lists diesel as fuel for the boat engine.

Both diesel and petrol outlets need somewhere for their output to go. If either side fills up, the Distillation Tower stops; check both output connections and their available storage.

There are two ways to run it: pump the crude oil into tanks on your boat and refine it somewhere else, or put a Distillation Tower up on the rig itself and pipe the diesel and petrol down to the boat.

The Oil Barrel holds 500 L. It unlocks at skill level 16 for 2 points and takes one each of Storage Cylinder, Filtering System, Connector Ports and Alloy Frame.

The Oil Tank is the big one. It unlocks at skill level 20 and takes one Filtering System, two Connector Ports, two Alloy Frames, two Storage Cylinders and one Advanced Alloy Mesh.

The wiki gives the Oil Tank 2000 L.

Keep the oil line closed from pump to tank: an open hose end anywhere on the line spills the oil into the sea. Open ports on connectors do not leak.
