The Last Caretaker Heating Guide: Boiler, Heaters and the Cold (Update 6 Beta)

In the Update 6 public beta, cold is a new danger in the snowy North Bastion region. Heat comes from a Boiler that makes steam, which the heaters connected to it turn into heat. Unlock the Boiler and the heaters in the skill tree before you look for them in the build menu. The small FLO TH-5 Local Heater can be carried on your back. The costs, tiers and fuel numbers further down come from a single beta stream so far, so they are marked as player reports.
What Update 6 adds is from Channel37's official beta post (A). How the Boiler and heaters work together, the three-way wall pipes and carrying the small heater are cross-checked (B) across beta streams from different channels and a Steam thread. The beta can still change before the full release; see the Update 6 page for the release date.
The picture at the top shows fuel containers from Update 5.5, not the Boiler: Channel37 has not released Update 6 screenshots yet.
How Heating Works
Update 6, The Jump, has been in public beta on Steam since October 9, 2026. Its story moves to North Bastion, a snowy mountain region where cold is a real danger, and it adds temperature, heaters, a boiler and frozen passages.

A Boiler produces steam, and heaters connected to it turn that steam into heat.

The Boiler and the heaters are skill-tree unlocks, so unlock them before you look for them in the build menu. One beta player at first missed that the heating modules had been added to the skills.

In North Bastion the steam pipes on the walls have their connection points in groups of three, and players run hoses from them to their heaters.

You can carry the small FLO TH-5 Local Heater on your back and take it off again: the prompt "Take from back (FLO TH-5 Local Heater)" appears in three different beta streams.

FLO TH-30 Area Heater

Uses: Steam 30.0 kW

Described as high-capacity heating for priority population areas. Its 30 kW steam input matches the Boiler output in the same stream.

Portable heater
You can grab, rotate, drop and throw it, and E switches it on and off. Its recipe, unlock and what it runs on were not shown.

Boiler or Gas Boiler Part?
The Boiler is not the old Gas Boiler Part, a junk item that dismantles into 1 Metal Scraps. Whether the Boiler recipe uses Gas Boiler Parts has not been confirmed.

One beta stream shows three new quests: Bring Back the Heat (search for a heating system, then use the Boiler to supply steam to a heater), What the Ice Holds (extract methane with a Methane Extractor) and Find the Laboratory (find and enter the laboratory inside North Bastion).

How do you make heat in The Last Caretaker?
In the Update 6 public beta, a Boiler produces steam and heaters connected to it turn the steam into heat. Unlock the Boiler and the heaters in the skill tree first. The beta also adds a Methane Extractor and methane canisters.
Can you carry a heater in The Last Caretaker?
Yes. In the Update 6 public beta you can carry the small FLO TH-5 Local Heater on your back and take it off again.
Where does the cold matter in The Last Caretaker?
In North Bastion, the snowy mountain region of Update 6, where the update adds temperature, heaters, a boiler and frozen passages. Update 6 has been in public beta on Steam since October 9, 2026.
Is the Boiler the same as the Gas Boiler Part?
No. The Gas Boiler Part is an older junk item that dismantles into 1 Metal Scraps. Whether the Update 6 Boiler recipe uses Gas Boiler Parts has not been confirmed.
