Dismantle Tool Guide: Scrap, Recycling and What You Get
Game data: Update 5.5 / Early Access 0.8.5.
Start with the Scrap item name, then check what happens at the Recycler. The table below separates confirmed names from the wiki's material outputs.
What the Dismantle Tool does
Before you start, the dismantle tooltip shows the electricity cost, time, durability and items you will receive.
According to the community wiki, the Dismantle Tool can break down most objects in the world and most things you build into Scraps or parts.
According to the community wiki, you cannot recover a part whose recipe you have not learned. Its example is a player who can build Whisper but not Logic Chip: dismantling Cyclone does not give that player a Logic Chip.
Examples seen on screen
Broken Robot has two different electricity readings.
| Object | Electricity | Time | Items received |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broken Display | 60 Wh | 4 seconds | Wire Scraps × 1, Plastic Scraps × 1, Broken Glass × 2, Aluminium Scraps × 1 |
| Rubber Tire | 40 Wh | 4 seconds | Rubber Scraps × 2 |
| Metal Junk | 30 Wh | 3 seconds | Metal Scraps × 1 |
| Office Couch | 40 Wh | 4 seconds | Fabric Scraps × 2, Plastic Scraps × 2, Metal Scraps × 1 |
| Broken Robot | 60 Wh in this screen; an earlier batch recorded 26 Wh. Electricity cost is disputed; outputs agree. | — | Tech Scraps × 2, Broken Glass × 1, Aluminium Scraps × 2, Wire Scraps × 2 |
How to unlock it
According to the community wiki, the Dismantle Tool unlocks at level 2 and costs 0 skill points. Its level and point cost have not yet been confirmed in-game.
What does a tier requirement mean?
A blueprint’s tier requirement is the player level you must reach before the Skills menu allows you to unlock it. Reaching that level does not automatically buy the blueprint or complete its quest requirements.
Check verified unlocks in the Skill Planner.
Tool gone from your action bar? Put it back from the Tools menu.
The Replica Scanner, which copies furniture into your Build menu, works the same way: you unlock it in Skills and pick it from the Tools menu (T).
From Scrap to materials
The Recycler turns Scraps into materials. Recycler unlocks at Tier 4; Fabricator unlocks at Tier 4.
The Scrap names are confirmed. The outputs below are from the community wiki; the High-Tech Scraps outputs, which are confirmed. No output quantities are confirmed here.
| Scrap name | Recycled materials |
|---|---|
| Metal Scraps | Iron, Copper (wiki) |
| Copper Scraps | Copper (wiki) |
| Plastic Scraps | Plastic, Rubber (wiki) |
| Wire Scraps | Plastic, Copper (wiki) |
| Rubber Scraps | Rubber, Plastic (wiki) |
| Fabric Scraps | Fabric (wiki) |
| Broken Glass | Glass (wiki) |
| Aluminium Scraps | Aluminium, Iron, Copper (wiki) |
| Tech Scraps | Gold, Polyurethane, Silicon (wiki) |
| High-Tech Scraps | Carbon Fiber, Titanium |
| Ultra-Tech Scraps | Neutronium, Plasma Gel (wiki) |
Enemy drops can include Scraps, too. See the combat guide for the recorded examples, or browse the item database by name.
Rhino Dismantler appears in the crafting list at Tier 21.
Mining and Nuggets
Mining ore with the Dismantle Tool yields Nuggets. Recycle the Nuggets for materials such as Titanium or paint pigments. See what every ore gives in the Ores & Mining guide, or go straight to the Titanium & Carbon Fiber guide and the Paint & Pigments guide.
Some Scraps are listed with different weights, for example 0.8 kg or 0.5 kg for High-Tech Scraps.
Scrapper enhancer
Each level of Scrapper reduces dismantling time and electricity use by 0.5%.
One screen also lists a 0.5% reduction per Scrapper level for repair time and repair electricity use.
Practical tips
- Read the dismantling tooltip before committing, especially when you want a particular part.
- Keep your Scraps for the Recycler instead of treating a Scrap name as a finished material.
- Looking for materials for a larger build? Start with the resource guide.
- For the separate Recovery Grinder process, use the Recovery Grinder guide.
- Found an Aged Lazarus Vial? See what it breaks into before you keep it.
- The Update 6 Boiler is a heating module, not the Gas Boiler Part; see the heating guide.
- For your next early-game decision, read the beginner's guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does dismantling use electricity?
Yes. The dismantle tooltip shows the electricity cost before you start; a Broken Display, for example, costs 60 Wh and takes 4 seconds.
What do you get from dismantling in The Last Caretaker?
Scrap items such as Metal Scraps, Copper Scraps, Wire Scraps and Broken Glass. A Recycler, unlocked at Tier 4, turns Scraps into materials.
When can you build a Recycler?
The Recycler blueprint unlocks at Tier 4. A blueprint’s tier requirement is the player level you must reach before the Skills menu allows you to unlock it. Reaching that level does not automatically buy the blueprint or complete its quest requirements.
What is the Gas Boiler Part for?
Nothing yet: it is a junk item that no recipe uses. Dismantling one gives 1 Metal Scraps. The Boiler that Update 6 added on October 19, 2026 is a separate machine, and its recipe does not use Gas Boiler Parts.
How do you unlock the Dismantle Tool?
According to the community wiki, the Dismantle Tool unlocks at level 2 and costs 0 skill points. Its level and point cost have not yet been confirmed in-game.
