The Last Caretaker Project Jonah: Walkthrough, Whale Oil and Whale Locations

Short answer: Project Jonah starts at Platform Omega (about 90, 6), in a control chamber below the platform. Put a growth pod with a fully grown human into the Jonah socket and send the call out to sea; a whale answers. Charge the whale fully and it dives for Oil and surfaces full. Move it into open sea first: whales get stuck under big structures like Platform Omega and the Lazarus Complex.

Game version: Early Access, Update 6 (0.10.0); Project Jonah came with Update 5.0 (June 24, 2026)

Project Jonah Walkthrough

Where does Project Jonah start?

At Platform Omega, at about 90, 6 on the map, in a control chamber below the platform. Omega Nursery, the shark quest, is at the same platform.

Update 5.0 (June 24, 2026) added Project Jonah, the whale questline.

What are the Project Jonah steps?

1. Find the control chamber below Platform Omega. 2. Put a growth pod holding a fully grown human into the Jonah socket; a Human Seed is not enough. 3. Send the call out to sea. A whale answers, and the quest is done.

Carrying the pod down the shaft in front of Tower 4 and back up is the hard part; a gyrocopter can drop it onto the walkway. Use a human you can spare, since getting the pod back out is awkward.

The quest gives 500 XP and 10 Enhancer Points.

Getting Oil From the Whale

How does the whale give you Oil?

The whale dives to collect Oil from the seabed and surfaces again once it is full.

Charge it fully before you send it down. A whale sent with a low charge came back with no Oil; at 100% it came back full.

To keep the Oil, build tanks or barrels on its back and charge it with batteries, solar or wind power placed on it. Building on the whale has also been blamed for whales that dive and never come back.

Is the whale worth it for Oil?

One dive brings up about 10,000 L of Oil, roughly 5,000 L of Diesel once refined. The Black Vein Station pump gives far more for less work.

Why does the whale swim in circles?

After resurfacing it can keep swimming in circles and push your boat away; climb onto it and switch it off.

Where the Whales Are

Why did my whale get stuck or come back empty?

Whales get stuck under big structures such as Platform Omega, the Lazarus Complex, Sanctuary Dock 12 and the Warehouse, then surface late with no Oil or not at all. Before a dive, move it about 500 m into open sea with its head pointing away from anything built.

Update 6 (October 19, 2026) fixed whales not spawning after you finished their quest.

Where are the whales?

Whales drift, and there is no map marker for them: one called at Platform Omega turned up near Exodus Station, another at about 48, 1. Several players have found two or three whales on their map.

Sounding your boat’s horn may bring a whale to you.

Keep the whale out of the fourth pen at Omega Nursery: it can get stuck there.
